On day two we arrived at my brother's home in Mars Hill, Maine
He has a beautiful home with lovely grounds.
On a trip into the countryside I spotted what I thought was sweet hay.
I tumbled into the ditch and landed on my back.
Why are they laughing instead of coming to my rescue?
Next I spotted a thistle, which is the national emlem of Scotland.
The thistle has very sharp prickly leaves.
In the middle ages, legend has it that the thistle saved Scotland in the middle ages when the Scots and Norsemen were at war.
The Norsemen landed in darkness and removed their boots and crept up, in their bare feet, on the unsuspecting Scottish army. They stepped on the sharp thistles, cried out in pain, and thus alerted the Scots who were able to drive them from their shores.
Russell Rock, the old swimming hole where I learned to swim, still looks much the same.
The farmers have started to grow alternative crops to potatoes.
