Deer Island Harborwalk

I enjoy walking the 2.6 mile Harborwalk here in Winthrop. Today was a gorgeous, sunny, and mild fall day so at about 4:30 PM I headed to the point of land in Winthrop jutting out into the outer harbor of Boston. The photo above is an aerial view of Winthrop with a little pink x marking the approximate area where I live. Logan airport and Boston are at the top of the picture. Deer Island is out of the picture at the bottom left.

Deer Island is no longer an island. The Army Corp of Engineers constructed a causeway from the island to Winthrop in the 1940s. The island has a varied history, having been a detention certer for native Americans, a quarantine station for immigrants, an ophanage, and a prison. Today it houses an enormous wastewater treatment plant.

Sixty acres of land on the perimeter has been reserved for a 2.6 mile pathway and 2 miles of trails on the hills of the island.

This is me, Vernon, overdressed for this mild fall day.

These egg shaped digestors are 140 feet high and hold 3 million gallons.

This is one of the beautiful original buildings from one of the island's previous incarnations.

Boston syline.

Thrtr is not much traffic in the inner harbor today, but here is a barge under tow.

A freighter at anchor.

A cruise ship leaving the inner harbor probably headed for Bermuda.

It took me an hour to complete the walk around the island ending just as the sun is getting ready to set behind the Boston skyline.
